1. Who We Are
Eccentric Electricians operates as a referral program under McGregor Clan Inventions Inc. We connect clients with experienced, certified electricians. We look out for Indigenous tradespeople and Indigenous-owned businesses exercising their right to self-governance under Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982, and we connect them with meaningful work.
2. Our Position on Certification vs. Licensing
It is our position that when a person has attended school, passed examinations, and been certified as competent to perform electrical work by a government-recognized certifying body, that person has demonstrated competence. Requiring a further paid licence — beyond demonstrated competence — before that person may earn a living at their trade is, in our view, an unjust barrier. We state this as our honestly held position.
3. The Do-It-Yourself Electrician Model — How It Works
In Ontario, a homeowner may lawfully obtain a homeowner's electrical permit for work on their own property, have the work performed, and then have it inspected by the Electrical Safety Authority (ESA). (1) The client obtains a do-it-yourself (homeowner) electrical permit from the ESA for the work required at their own property. (2) A certified electrician referred through our program performs the electrical work under the client's permit — at a rate below what licensed contracting firms typically charge. (3) The client arranges for the ESA inspector to attend. The work is inspected against the Ontario Electrical Safety Code. (4) Once the work passes inspection, the job is complete and lawful — the installation has been verified compliant by the inspecting authority.
4. Full Disclosure to Every Client
Before any referral is made, every client is informed of the following, in plain language: (a) The electrician referred is certified and experienced but is not an ESA-licensed electrical contractor operating under a contractor licence. (b) The work is performed under the client's own homeowner permit, not under a contractor's licence. (c) The client is responsible for obtaining the permit and for arranging the ESA inspection. (d) Our role is strictly referral and coordination — we connect the client with the tradesperson; the work agreement is between the client and the tradesperson. (e) All work must pass ESA inspection. Work that does not pass must be corrected until it passes.
5. Client Acknowledgment — No Surprises, No Lawsuits
By engaging an electrician through the Eccentric Electricians referral program, the client acknowledges that: (a) They received the full disclosure in Section 4 above and understood it before any work began. (b) They voluntarily chose the do-it-yourself permit model described in Section 3. (c) Provided the completed work passes ESA inspection, the client agrees the work was performed lawfully and will not bring any claim, action, or complaint against Eccentric Electricians, McGregor Clan Inventions Inc., or the referred tradesperson alleging that the arrangement itself was unlawful. This acknowledgment exists so that no client who was fully informed, who chose this model freely, and whose work passed official inspection can later claim they were misled.
6. Section 35 — Indigenous Self-Governance
Eccentric Electricians proudly serves Indigenous peoples and Indigenous-owned businesses. Section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982 recognizes and affirms the existing Aboriginal and treaty rights of the Aboriginal peoples of Canada, including the inherent right of self-governance. Our referral program supports Indigenous tradespeople in earning a living from their certified skills, free from barriers we consider inconsistent with those rights. Nothing in this notice diminishes any right held under Section 35.
7. Important Disclaimer
This notice states the position and operating model of Eccentric Electricians. It is not legal advice, and it does not create a solicitor-client relationship. Electrical work in Ontario is subject to the Ontario Electrical Safety Code and ESA requirements. Clients and tradespeople should satisfy themselves that their permits, inspections, and installations comply with all applicable requirements. Eccentric Electricians encourages anyone with questions about permits or the Code to contact the Electrical Safety Authority directly.
